CELESTE
The CELESTE vision focuses on helping cities to get ready to the new paradigm on safety and sustainable urban mobility because of the foreseen entry in force of ISA regulation. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems, mandatory for all vehicles commercialized in the EU from 2022, enable speed alerts and, in some cases, automatic speed reduction and compliance.
CELESTE seeks to work both on technological solutions and assessment tools. European cities are the object of severe problems related to high levels of congestion of road traffic. Current solutions for regulating traffic rely mostly on static speed limits defined by national and European regulations. However, this model fails to adapt to unforeseen circumstances such as adverse weather conditions, high levels of air pollution, or mass events. That is, one static speed limit may be too high or too low depending on the circumstances. The solution is to provide city traffic managers with the means to set and ensure compliance with dynamic speed limits according to the current and foreseen situation.
