e-Ultimate

EIT Urban Mobility's e-Ultimate programme aims to modernize Europe's bus fleet in the most optimal way. In European cities, electric buses (battery-powered) are increasingly being introduced, and their efficiency depends to a large extent on the environment and the type of charging scheme. The buses are fitted with different charging and operating systems. The efficiency of these systems, in turn, depends to a large extent on the system into which they are integrated. Depending on the charging and operating mode chosen, the charging, operating and maintenance costs over the useful life of an electric bus can vary greatly.

The e-ULTIMATE project aims to develop a decision support software (DSS) that will design the optimal charging and operation system for a given city, quantify and thus make the different operation methods comparable on the basis of the costs incurred.

Based on data collected during the pilot tests in the 5 cities involved in the project (Barcelona, Badalona, Decín, Zalaegerszeg, Lisbon), the DSS will use information from real examples to help make the best decision for each city, taking into account its specificities and potential. The decision-support software identifies the technology and charging method that best meets the mobility requirements of the cities tested. By summarizing a range of relevant information, it is able to determine the optimal charging method and technology to achieve the most cost-effective operating costs for cities.

The Hungarian part of the pilot test will be carried out in the city of Zalaegerszeg, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of electrification and the introduction of electric buses among the population, city decision-makers and bus operators.
